Hazardous Materials Technician

This 50 hour course is designed to provide the responder with the understanding and skills necessary to respond to most hazardous materials emergencies in an offensive or defensive manner. The course is designed to be a 70/30 mix of hands on and classroom.  Completion of this course is dependent on both field skills and written examination. This class meets NFPA 472 Chapter 7 and 29 CFR 1910.120(q) Hazardous Materials Technician Level.

Course description:

Every Fire Scene is a HAZMAT scene until proven otherwise, this 40 hour course is designed to familiarize and train fire investigators and other potential Emergency Response Team Members in regulations, suggested guidelines, procedures and techniques in mitigating a chemical release and/or spill on or off site. This course will address the training requirements of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and National Fire Protection Association Standards at the Hazardous Materials Technician Level. The goal of the course is to allow for the student to safely and effectively respond to Chemical Emergencies and meet the requirements of NFPA 472 Standard for Hazmat Awareness, Operations and Technician Level, as well as meet the OSHA HAZWOPER requirements outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120. The program is instructed by DuPont Emergency Response Solutions and the Institute of Forensic Investigators utilizing the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) curriculum.

The course is delivered by experts from DuPont Chemical who have been instructing in relation to HAZMAT for over 20 years; and by instructors for the Institute of Forensic Investigation.
