With thrilling rides, journeys through enchanting lands and wondrous delights for all the senses amusement parks provide something for everyone. The National Safety Council offers these safety tips to ensure a fun day for family and friends.

Before Leaving

Dress Properly

bulletSelect comfortable walking shoes that provide good traction. Open-toed shoes are not advisable.
bulletWear comfortable, light-colored, casual clothing for maximum coolness.
bulletConsider protection from the sun by wearing sunglasses and head protection.
bulletChild Safety Considerations
bulletCarry current photos and descriptions of children.
bulletMake sure children know the full names of their parents.
bulletIf supervising a group, be aware of potential medical problems. Know all names, addresses and phone numbers. Always provide for adequate supervision.
bulletSelect a common meeting place ahead of time in case of separation and agree on a definite schedule.

Upon Arrival at the Park

bulletBe alert pedestrian; control children. Most parks have a "lost parents" facility. Check the location upon arrival.
bulletRead distributed park informational literature and become acquainted with guest services such as strollers, first aid facilities, restrooms, picnic areas and accommodations for the handicapped.
bulletInstruct your children to go to the nearest park employee if they become separated from the group.

While at the Park

bulletWalk, don't run. Be careful in areas that may become wet.
bulletWatch for tripping hazards such as litter and uneven walking surfaces.
bulletUse handrails on stairs and steps.
bulletConsider your personal ride limitations. How are you affected by height, speed or movement?
bulletLook for and obey warning signs - age/height restrictions, medical warnings, etc.
bulletListen carefully to verbal warnings and instructions from ride operators.
bulletNote the locations of ride exits and emergency routes - let children know where you will meet them.
bulletSecure loose garments, hats, glasses and other possessions while riding.
bulletAllow time to rest. Take breaks for refreshments and for protection from the sun.
bulletTake not of clothing family members are wearing in case you are separated in the crowds at the park.
