Yard and Garden Safety Tips
For many people, working in the yard or garden is a delightful way to
exercise, improve the value of their homes or simply wile away summer
afternoons.
The keys to avoiding accidents and injuries while working outside are common
sense and using the right equipment for the job.
Following are some valuable tips for those who will be working outside the
house to use.
- First, may sure you are in shape to do the work or
try to slowly work into it. Try to start an easy exercise program in the
winter or spring so you won’t get sore or stiff muscles when you begin to do
the yard or garden work.
- Rotating power equipment, such as lawn mowers and
string trimmers, can propel debris long distances. Be sure the work area is
free of loose material before starting, and keep children and pets away.
- Wear proper protective equipment such as eye and ear
protection. Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeved shirts and long pants for
further protection.
- Always be sure of your footing, especially on damp
grass and hills. Never work while standing on an unsteady surface such as a
stool or a ladder.
- When working with electrical equipment, make sure all plugs and cords are
in good condition and consider the use of GFCI’s.
- When working outdoors, don’t forget to use
sunscreen, take plenty of breaks to cool down, and drink fluids to prevent
dehydration.
- When working with chemicals- pesticides, weed
killers, gasoline, etc.- know the hazards, appropriate first aid, specified
PPE, and the correct usage.
