Responding to Corrosive Emergencies

This 24 hour class is designed to teach the Responder how to respond to Hazardous Materials Incidents involving corrosive materials.

This class meets NFPA 472, Chapter 6, Private sector specialist employee A and 29CFR1910.120(q) requirements.

Upon completion of this class, the Responder will be able to:

bulletKnow how to implement the employer's emergency response plan.
bulletKnow the classification, identification, and verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and equipment.
bulletBe able to function within an assigned role in the incident command system.
bulletKnow how to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment provided to the hazardous materials technician.
bulletUnderstand hazard and risk assessment techniques
bulletBe able to perform advance control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources, and personal protective equipment available with the unit.
bulletUnderstand and implement decontamination procedures.
bulletUnderstand termination procedures.
bulletUnderstand basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior.

bulletDistinguish between acids and bases.
bulletDetermine neutralizations of corrosive materials.
bulletDiscuss the difference between fuming acids and normal acids.
bulletDiscuss response techniques involving corrosives.
